HOUDINI ENGINE C4D FULL

I personally primarily use C4D, but if I could switch to a full Houdini workflow, I would.

You should definitely go with Houdini if you have the time to learn. Save Entagma's courses (they really are excellent!) for when you know your way around a little better. Seconding the recommendation for Mark Fancher's "Stop Being Afraid of Houdini" course, it's geared specifically towards C4D artists trying to learn. There's no avoiding the learning curve, but in general the UX has improved with every version and it's nowhere near as hard as it was in the bad old days of DOPs. You're still going to need to learn more about how 3D works under the hood to get the most value out of Houdini, but MOPs will make your day-to-day much easier.Īs far as simulation goes there's no question Houdini is the industry standard. Houdini expects you to know a bit about how transforms work in 3D software, and MOPs helps abstract some of that into human-readable interfaces (among other features). I wrote MOPs for Houdini which serves a similar purpose to Mograph in C4D or MASH in Maya. There's perfectly good reasons to use both and it's up to you which package is worth it to solve a particular problem. Houdini is going to ask a little more of you than C4D will, but the trade-off is that you get a ton of flexibility.

Once you learn to use the program, it will cut production times considerably. It’s more suitable for pipelines if you are ever wanting to scale your company, particularly with the increasing implementation of Solaris and Hydra delegates.340AUD a year for 2 seats compared to 1500 for one + GSG and whatever plug-ins you use. Not to mention the plethora of other benefits like: I’ve never had a client be like “nah we don’t want to use sims for this project”. I think that replacing c4d with Houdini is a good idea if all you do is 3D for advertisement as technical simulations seems to be the way the market is moving. Everyone has a different method of learning things and there’s no right or wrong way to do it. It took me 8 months before I stopped exporting alembics to c4d and moved fully to hou and that’s all good. You could easily learn basic Houdini skills and up the value of your agencies offering by dedicating a few hours a day learning the ropes and slowly implementing it into your workflow on a project to project basis. When I get into something, I get a little bit obsessed for the lack of a better word. There are gonna be points where you wanna go back to c4d, but stick with it. But that been said, once you get a taste of proceduralism, it is very difficult to go back to a destructive workflow.Īdvice I would give is dive into it. C4D does all of this for you behind the scenes.

Its all about using attributes to get from point A to B. Houdini requires the user to take on a different perspective than different DCC's. There's a hundred ways to go about 1 task which can make it difficult/overwhelming to figure out how you are going to deliver a shot. Houdini is an open sandbox of possibility. The tag system in cinema4d makes no sense to me and the power you have within Houdini in terms of dynamics is not even close to comparable.

I made the switch about a year ago now and haven't looked back.
